Stones Place: How to drink and stay safe

Stones Place: How to drink and stay safe

Although a night of drinking is a great opportunity to unwind and catch up with your friends, you must keep your health and safety a top priority. Find out how you can exercise precautions to avoid conflicts, accidents or any other problems that would spoil your night.

Eat before drinking

Your body absorbs the alcohol more quickly if you drink on an empty stomach, getting you drunk even before the night properly begins. Grab a hearty meal before drinking so you don’t miss out on the fun.

You can also keep yourself full throughout the night by eating some snacks in between drinks. Avoid salty food as this will only make you thirsty. Do not mix sugary drinks with alcohol as well and make sure you drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Control your alcohol intake

Lower your alcohol intake with non-alcoholic beverages. Before drinking your shot, quench your thirst with water first so that you don’t end up drinking too much alcohol in one go. You can also opt for drinks with a low alcohol content so you won’t easily get drunk.

Avoid drinking games

Drinking games can make you drunk faster and may force you to drink more than you can handle. Find safer ways to keep the night fun and exciting such as engaging in friendly debates, singing karaoke or sharing stories among the group.

Know your limits

Each person has different alcohol tolerance. Although your friend seems to be doing fine after several shots of tequila, you can’t guarantee that you’ll feel just as fine with the same amount of alcohol. Make sure that you know how much you can take.

It’s best to set restrictions on yourself and stick to them throughout the night. If you’re a light drinker, sip your drink and try to finish it slowly instead of gulping it and quickly topping up your glass.

Don’t drink and drive

Before heading to the, it is advisable to plan how you’re going to get home afterwards. You can designate a friend who will drive you home after your night out so that they can limit their drinks.

If you plan to use public transport, make sure you have enough money with you. You can also ask a trusted friend or family to pick you up from the venue for a safer ride home.

Don’t leave your drink unattended

If you’re drinking in a public place, remember to keep an eye out for your drink. If you wish to go to the restroom, ask your friend to watch your drink while you’re away. However, if no one is available to watch it for you, it’s safer to dump it out and get a new glass.

Establish expectations with your friends

You can avoid a lot of trouble if you discuss with your friends the plans for the night. Set a few guidelines that you will follow in case of conflicts or emergencies and determine the kinds of behaviour that are acceptable and which ones should be avoided. More importantly, watch out for each other so that you can get the most out of your night out.
